On February 20th, Vitalik Buterin took an Ask Me Anything (AMA) where he responded to the serious question as to whether Ethereum should embrace the casino industry. There has been widespread criticism amongst certain sectors that Ethereum is not doing enough to support blockchain casinos. Buterin responded that he would leave the crypto space if such a “moral reversal” occurred and that the very notion of a crypto casino goes against his fundamental beliefs. “Perhaps the most disappointing thing for me recently,” says Buterin, “was when someone said that Ethereum is bad and intolerant because we don’t respect the ‘casinos’ on the blockchain enough, and other chains are happy to accept any application, so they are better.” This comes at a critical time for the Ethereum Foundation. Buterin has suggested neutrality for the application layer and only limited support for specific projects. Financial concerns have consumed many discussions about the Foundation. Pure neutrality at the application layer would allow for more gambling. A more limited approach, conversely, would allow the Ethereum Foundation to uphold their own ethical standards, while making calculated and frugal decisions regarding funds. Buterin expressed disappointment at the online meetings, noticing an over-focus on issues such as crypto gambling. But he conceded that when he meets people in person they often express similar views to him, having a moral focus on the issue of casinos, rather than a purely financial concern. There may be other issues that Buterin is addressing by targeting online casinos. He may be taking a swipe at other tokens like Solana that have promoted meme coins without restraint. There may be other so-called ‘Ethereum killer’ tokens that Buterin is taking a swipe at. Perhaps the ‘ethical approach’, according to this perspective at least, is a case of sour grapes. The Ethereum price, after all, has been struggling in comparison to other tokens. This all comes as the Ethereum Foundation changes its strategy concerning funding, responding to concerns of the community that the foundation should fund projects with decentralized finance instead of merely selling Ethereum tokens. The foundation responded to this request by allocating 45,000 ETH, valued at $120 million, to defi solutions. This would involve funding platforms like Compound. The community agreed to the measures proposed.

The broader crypto market is facing a downturn, but some projects are still recording significant network activity. One such asset is Ondo (ONDO), the native token of the Ondo ecosystem. A few weeks ago, Ondo’s transaction volume spiked to roughly $450 million before a steep plunge that saw the metric hover around $200 million. However, it has begun to rise again and is well on its way to smashing the $300 million mark. Although ONDO dominates transaction volumes, the same cannot be said for asset prices. As the fifth-largest RWA by market cap, ONDO was worth $1.23 at the time of writing, recording a slight uptick in the past 24 hours. The asset was down 7% weekly and 6% monthly, according to data from CoinMarketCap. ONDO is among the most visited tokens on CoinMarketCap, but the asset still lacks the daily and monthly momentum seen among its rivals. Ondo Records Significant Developments Nevertheless, the Ondo project has recorded several developments lately. The team recently unveiled the Ondo Chain, a layer-1 blockchain built for institutional-grade RWAs. The developers said Ondo Chain was built to end the lack of features necessary for regulated assets to thrive on-chain. The new network aims to crush infrastructure barriers for tokenized regulated securities. The barriers include incompatibility with DeFi, cross-chain liquidity fragmentation, high and volatile transaction fees, and inadequate security. Ondo Chain combines the openness of public blockchains with the compliance and security features of permissioned networks. Besides the introduction of the Ondo Chain, Ondo Finance recently secured a strategic collaboration with the U.S. President Donald Trump-backed DeFi protocol, World Liberty Financial (WLFI), to accelerate the adoption of tokenized RWAs. Bitcoin’s short-term holders (STH) are at a pivotal moment, as revealed by the latest BTC HODL Waves chart shared by Benjamin Cowen (@intocryptoverse). The data highlights a clear historical pattern: when the share of short-term holders—those holding BTC for less than six months—peaks and starts to decline, Bitcoin often enters a phase of heightened volatility. The current structure of the market suggests that BTC might be nearing a crucial shift, with its price hovering near all-time highs. The BTC HODL Waves graph allows traders to observe the price movements of Bitcoin against the distribution of coins held for varying amounts of time. The white line indicates Bitcoin’s price, which has risen from pennies in 2009 to almost $70,000 in 2024, while the color bands represent percentages of BTC held for varying lengths. Therefore, as of now, most of the supply is comprised of short-term holders, represented by the red, orange, and yellow bands, which cover holders from less than a day to six months. Similar patterns emerged during previous bull market peaks such as 2013, 2017, and 2021, which saw short-term holder increases as Bitcoin hit significant highs before corrections followed. Although short-term trading activity has started to increase, long-term holders-BTC holders for more than one year-remain solid in their position. The yellow to green bands, which signify holders having between one year and ten years, continue to hold the upper hand. In the past, when these holders started selling into strength, it marked the distribution phase in a cycle. Their toughness so far indicates that the market still has a space to run before a big sell-off occurs. Interestingly, the more-than 10-year holder population is holding quite steady, indicating that some of the early adopters and also institutional investors are still holding theirs regardless of the price. The true conviction, which reads that the asset holds true value over the longer term, persists despite the lure of speculative traders coming into the market. If historical patterns hold, Bitcoin’s short-term holder dominance could act as a warning sign for increased volatility. A surge in STH supply typically precedes market corrections, as newer investors tend to sell when sentiment shifts. However, if long-term holders continue to hold firm, BTC could still have enough strength to push towards new highs before a cooling-off period begins.
