Celo developers completed the Ethereum Layer 2 conversion nearly two years after the initial proposal
Celo developers have completed the Ethereum Layer 2 conversion nearly two years after the initial proposal, originally an independent Layer 1 blockchain, it has now completed its transition to the Ethereum Layer 2 network.
The official conversion on the mainnet occurred around 11 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday, with a hard fork occurring at block height 31,056,500. Block production of Celo L1 stopped at this point and the network fully transitioned to Layer 2.
The core developers of this project, CLabs first proposed in July 2023 for Celo to switch from Layer 1 to a Layer 2 chain. The development of Layer 2 utilized Optimism's customizable toolkit OP Stack. This means that Celo is now operating as an Optimistic rollup.
