Trump Plans to Exempt Some Tariffs for Auto Manufacturers

According to the Financial Times, U.S. President Trump plans to exempt auto manufacturers from some of the toughest tariffs, which marks another concession in the trade war following intense lobbying by auto industry executives. Two informed sources revealed that this move will spare auto parts from two tariffs: ones imposed to combat fentanyl production and those on steel and aluminum products. However, Trump's 25% tariff on all imported vehicles will remain in place. Another 25% tariff on auto parts will also be retained and is set to take effect on May 3. While the U.S. has previously excluded auto items from the "reciprocal" tariffs on major trade partners, American auto companies have been lobbying for more exemptions. These concessions signify an initial victory for the auto industry and another retreat by Trump on his most aggressive tariffs. Informed sources say current negotiations mainly focus on simplifying tariff procedures, such as relaxing rules of origin requirements for auto parts. This policy adjustment reflects the Trump administration's pragmatic response to pressure from specific industries while maintaining the core stance of the "America First" trade policy.
