Speaker of the US House of Representatives: The House will still "green light" Trump's global tariff plan

Speaker of the US House of Representatives: The House will still "green light" Trump's global tariff plan

Bitget2025/04/07 23:47

According to a report by Politico, US House Speaker Johnson said on Monday that even if some Republican members publicly pleaded with Trump to negotiate the cancellation of tariffs before they take effect on Wednesday, the House would still provide "space" for Trump to implement his massive global tariff system. Johnson said: "We will give him the necessary space to implement policies and then see how things develop." The speaker went on to say that Trump is "actively participating in and trying to solve" trade deficit issues. Opposition within the Republican Party has taken the form of bipartisan legislation aimed at reclaiming Congress's power over tariffs from the president. Previously, Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell and Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley proposed legislation limiting the president's unilateral power to impose tariffs. U.S Representative Don Bacon (a Nebraska Republican) plans to introduce a House version of this legislation on Monday. Due strong opposition from a group of fiscal conservatives, Johnson refused on Monday to publicly commit that he would submit a revised Senate budget plan for vote in the House this week. However, some senior GOP aides indicated that current plans are still set for final voting as originally scheduled Wednesday afternoon.
