The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, was hit by a significant cyberattack on March 10, leading to widespread outages and disruptions for users.

Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, confirmed the attack, describing it as “massive” and suggesting that either a nation-state or a large, coordinated group was responsible.

“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved,” Musk stated in a post on X.

The attack resulted in over 40,000 outage reports by mid-morning, according to Downdetector.

Users reported difficulties accessing both the app and website, with disruptions peaking between 11:15 AM and 1:15 PM Eastern Time.

The hacker group Dark Storm Team has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Known for its pro-Palestinian stance and alleged ties to geopolitical conflicts involving Ukraine and Russia, the group specialises in Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks that overwhelm servers with excessive traffic.

While Musk implied the attack was ongoing, some functionality was restored later in the day.

Cybersecurity experts have weighed in on Musk’s claims of state involvement.

Nicholas Reese, an adjunct instructor at NYU’s Center for Global Affairs, expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a state actor being behind the attack due to its relatively short duration.

“Something like this was designed to be discovered,” Reese said, adding that it may have been intended as a warning or demonstration rather than a covert operation.

This incident highlights broader security challenges faced by social media platforms.

Musk’s leadership has drawn criticism due to his controversial role in government initiatives under President Trump’s administration.

Protests against Tesla stores and vandalism targeting Musk-related enterprises have escalated alongside his political involvement.
