Microsoft prepares as OpenAI's GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 near launch

Microsoft is increasing its infrastructure capacity to support OpenAI's upcoming large language models, with GPT-4.5 expected as early as next week and GPT-5 anticipated in late May.

According to The Verge, Microsoft is preparing server resources for the new models.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company plans to "next ship GPT-4.5."

GPT-4.5, internally known as Orion, represents a significant advancement and is the last model not based on a chain-of-thought approach.

It has reportedly been trained using synthetic data to overcome data scarcity, which was initially reported by The Information.

GPT-5 is expected to integrate OpenAI’s technologies, including the o3 reasoning model.

While OpenAI released o3-mini last month, there are no plans to release o3 as a separate entity; instead, it will be incorporated into the GPT-5 framework.

Microsoft hosts OpenAI's models on its Azure platform but clarified that the service does not interact with tools operated by OpenAI, including ChatGPT.

Microsoft and OpenAI expanded their partnership last month through President Donald Trump’s $500 billion AI venture called Stargate.

Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has experienced rapid growth, amassing roughly 400 million weekly active users by February 2025.

This growth has enabled OpenAI to seek funding at a $340 billion valuation, according to CNBC.

However, the emergence of DeepSeek, an open-source AI model developed in China at a lower cost, has intensified competition.

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen described DeepSeek as "AI's Sputnik moment."

OpenAI faces pressure to demonstrate the value of GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 to both users and investors.

If OpenAI rolls out GPT-5 by late May, it would coincide with Microsoft’s Build developer conference, which kicks off on May 19.

Microsoft is also developing its version of OpenAI’s new Operator AI agent, designed to perform tasks on the web autonomously.
