Satoshi Nakamoto's $108B Bitcoin stash rivals Gates' fortune
Bitcoin's (CRYPTO:BTC) pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, may now hold over 1.096 million BTC, potentially exceeding Bill Gates' net worth with holdings valued at $108 billion.
Crypto data platform Arkham Intelligence identified multiple wallets tied to Nakamoto.
This would rank Nakamoto among the world's wealthiest individuals.
Coinbase director Conor Grogan noted that Nakamoto's last known transactions with a centralised exchange occurred through Cavirtex, a Canadian exchange acquired by Kraken in 2016.
"In total, this research points to Satoshi owning 1.096M BTC, $108B worth, making them wealthier on paper than Bill Gates," according to Grogan.
The holdings of more than $107 billion would place Nakamoto as the 15th-richest person in the world on paper, ahead of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaires list.
However, Arkham relies on Sergio Lerner’s Patoshi Pattern theory, which exploits privacy-related flaws of v.01, an early Bitcoin protocol, to pinpoint blocks that were likely mined by Satoshi.
According to Lerner, there is “evidence that links the Patoshi patterns to Satoshi, based on public information sources and the blockchain.”
Grogan suggested that Kraken may possess information on Nakamoto's identity if Cavirtex maintained Know Your Customer (KYC) data.
"As such, there is a chance that Jesse Powell has information on the true identity behind Satoshi, if they maintained any KYC information on this wallet," Grogan noted.
At the time, KYC verification was not widely enforced in the cryptocurrency industry.
At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $96,782.74.
