Rosseti to launch Bitcoin mining operations
Rosseti, Russia's largest power grid operator, is set to explore Bitcoin mining ventures at its underutilised power centers.
The company aims to coordinate the deployment of mining infrastructure across the nation.
According to state news agency TASS, Rosseti sees this initiative as a means to utilise spare capacity in low-load power facilities.
This strategy is expected to enhance tariff revenue and tax contributions while supporting economic growth.
Rosseti has confirmed its readiness for mining operations, stating that its infrastructure is equipped with the necessary equipment to manage the loads from mining facilities.
The company also possesses operational data on available capacity and consumption patterns, ensuring a reliable power supply.
Currently, Rosseti is discussing various aspects of its mining development strategy, including the potential introduction of a separate tariff structure specifically for miners.
This move comes after President Vladimir Putin signed a law last August regulating cryptocurrency mining as part of Russia's digital asset management strategy.
Under this law, only registered entities are permitted to engage in large-scale crypto mining operations within the country.
However, due to power shortages, the Russian government has imposed a ban on crypto mining in several regions starting January 1, 2025, which will last until March 15, 2031.
Rosseti's exploration into Bitcoin mining reflects a broader trend among energy providers looking to capitalise on unused energy resources while navigating regulatory frameworks.
"The largest grid company in Russia can act as an operator for coordinating the placement of mining infrastructure," Rosseti noted, highlighting its potential role in shaping the future of cryptocurrency mining in the country.
At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $98,813.42.
