Virtuals Protocol detects three phishing links and Discord hack
Virtuals Protocol (CRYPTO:VIRTUAL), an AI agent platform, experienced a Discord server breach on January 8, 2025, alongside the discovery of fake Google links impersonating the platform's official website.
According to the Virtuals team, the incident occurred after a moderator’s private key was compromised, allowing unauthorised access to the server.
The breach has since been resolved.
In a separate incident, cybersecurity firm Scam Sniffer identified three malicious links on Google Search posing as Virtuals Protocol’s website.
Users were warned against interacting with these fraudulent links and advised to verify official URLs.
These scams highlight the increasing sophistication of phishing tactics targeting crypto users.
Phishing attacks and private key breaches remain top concerns in the cryptocurrency space.
According to a report from blockchain security firm CertiK, phishing campaigns led to over $1 billion in losses across 296 attacks in 2024.
Private key compromises accounted for $855 million in losses during the same period.
David Holtzman, a former military intelligence professional and chief strategy officer at Naoris, emphasised the vulnerability of centralised systems.
"Artificial intelligence and quantum computers pose massive threats to centralised systems due to their single points of failure," he noted, stressing the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
The incidents at Virtuals Protocol come days after the team fixed a critical bug in one of its audited contracts.
The vulnerability, discovered by a researcher, was promptly addressed, with the company pledging a bounty as recognition for the researcher’s efforts.
As attacks grow more sophisticated, the importance of enhanced security protocols and user caution in the crypto industry becomes increasingly evident.
These breaches serve as a reminder for platforms and users to remain vigilant against phishing and private key threats.
At the time of reporting, the Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL) price was $3.36.
