PUBG creator Brendan Greene says NFTs aren’t part of Artemis' vision
Brendan Greene, the creator of PUBG, revealed that non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are not a focus for his upcoming metaverse project, Artemis.
Speaking to IGN on January 4, Greene made it clear that he is "not even thinking about" including NFTs in the game.
Instead, the primary goal for Greene’s studio, PlayerUnkown Productions, is to refine the engine and create enjoyable gameplay experiences.
“Our concern is about getting the engine to a state that we can make things in it and then as I said, Game Two, we’ll test ideas then, but really now, not even thought about it,” Greene explained.
While NFTs are off the table, Greene acknowledged the potential for blockchain technology in the project.
He described blockchain as an “interesting financial instrument” and mentioned that it could be integrated into Artemis if necessary.
"Ultimately, it’s a digital ledger, and if we can use a digital ledger, we’ll find the best one and use it,” Greene said.
Greene also discussed his vision for the metaverse, criticising other projects that have focused on "intellectual property bubbles" rather than building functional worlds.
“I want to build a metaverse because I don't think anyone else is,” he stated, emphasising the importance of creating a true metaverse.
The Artemis project will consist of three games.
The first, called "Prologue," is a realistic survival game built using NASA data and is set to launch in 2025.
The second game will feature large-scale multiplayer worlds, and the third stage, Artemis, aims to create a 3D internet where users can generate and interact within multiple worlds.
Greene’s goal for Artemis is to foster user creativity and gameplay, similar to Minecraft and Star Trek’s Holodeck.
