the Hong Kong police announced the numbers and trends of online investment fraud cases yesterday. In the first nine months of this year, a total of 3,468 cases were received, with a total loss of about 2.2 billion Hong Kong dollars. Although it has decreased compared to the same period last year, the number of cases in October this year increased by 24% compared to September, indicating a rebound trend. Nearly 40% of the cases involved financial investment products, and 35% involved virtual assets. Among them, the largest single loss amount for virtual asset fraud cases was about 78.47 million Hong Kong dollars. The victim was a female executive of a virtual currency company who was lured by the fraudster to open a video dialogue to discuss investment details, and then the electronic wallet account password was stolen and a huge amount of funds was transferred away. As virtual asset investment becomes more and more popular, the police reminded investors to be vigilant and avoid falling into scams.
