After Trump's election victory, the United States may face five major changes
The New York Times predicts that if Trump regains power, there could be five major changes in the direction of American politics.
1. Strengthening presidential power: After returning to the White House, Trump is likely to change the balance of power by increasing presidential authority within federal government departments operating independently from the White House and by appointing more "insiders".
2. Attacking political opponents: Trump is likely to "use his presidential powers to retaliate against his perceived political enemies", with current President Biden and his family being prime targets. Previously, Trump had stated that if re-elected, he would appoint a special prosecutor to "investigate" Biden and his family.
3. Strict control over immigration: For Trump, cracking down on illegal immigration has always been one of his core policies. Stephen Miller, Trump's chief immigration advisor, said that a second term for Trump would involve mass deportations of illegal immigrants and it is expected that over one million people will be deported from the United States each year.
4. Massive taxation: Trump plans to impose new tariffs on most imported goods with an average rate reaching 10%. The New York Times points out that this move not only raises domestic prices but may also trigger a global trade war damaging US exporters' interests.
5. Alienating European allies: Once back in office, it’s very possible for Trump to alienate traditional European allies and weaken NATO; he might even directly lead America out of NATO.
