Ripple’s (CRYPTO:XRP) Chief Technology Officer, Davut Schwartz, dismissed allegations against Character.AI in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the mother of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III.

Schwartz addressed the issue on social media, emphasising that the claims are legally unfounded and arguing that Character.AI’s actions are protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The lawsuit, initiated by Setzer’s mother, alleges negligence, wrongful death, misleading trade practices, and product liability against Character.AI.

The complaint claims the platform failed to provide adequate safety measures to protect young users from potentially harmful content.

According to reports, Setzer had frequently interacted with chatbots simulating characters from popular media before his death.

Character.AI responded to the lawsuit by expressing condolences to the family and announcing updates to its safety protocols.

The company introduced age-based content filters and enhanced mechanisms to detect harmful interactions.

“We deeply regret the loss and extend our sincere sympathies to the family,” the company said in a statement.

Despite the lawsuit, Schwartz defended the AI platform’s stance, emphasising the importance of balancing corporate responsibility with freedom of expression.

He characterised the legal arguments presented in the case as flawed and expressed support for Character.AI’s right to free expression while enhancing user safety.

Character.AI’s approach to this situation and its commitment to improving safety measures have sparked discussions about the responsibilities of technology companies in safeguarding users while upholding freedom of expression.

At the time of reporting, the XRP price was $0.5133.
