Japanese man sentenced to three years in prison for using artificial intelligence to create virus

a 25-year-old Japanese man named Ryuki Hayashi has been found guilty of manufacturing a computer virus using generative artificial intelligence. The Tokyo District Court ruled that he will serve three years in prison, with a four-year suspension. Prosecutors had requested a four-year prison sentence. This may be the first time someone in Japan has been found guilty of misusing generative artificial intelligence. According to the judgment and other sources, around March 31, 2023, Ryuki Hayashi created a virus similar to ransomware using a computer and smartphone at his home in Kawasaki. He used illegal computer program source code obtained through artificial intelligence to create the virus.
