Buenos Aires has introduced a blockchain-based digital identity solution for its residents, leveraging the decentralised identity protocol QuarkID.

This integration into the city’s miBA digital platform aims to provide greater control and security over personal data for 3.6 million active users.

According to local reports, the city rolled out the digital identity system on October 1, powered by QuarkID and supported by the ZKsync Era, an Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) scaling protocol utilising zero-knowledge rollups.

The QuarkID protocol, developed by Web3 firm Extrimian, enables citizens to manage their digital identities securely and efficiently.

The government of Buenos Aires stated that the implementation of this blockchain-based solution is setting a “new standard in privacy and security for digital identity management.”

The QuarkID wallet enables users to store data in a self-sovereign manner, allowing individuals to control their credentials when interacting with the government, businesses, or other entities.

This initiative aligns with Buenos Aires’ broader blockchain strategy, which has been expanding in recent years.

In September 2023, the city began issuing birth and marriage certificates on-chain and has plans to incorporate additional records, such as proof of income and academic credentials.

Diego Fernández, the city’s secretary of innovation and digital transformation, emphasised that the use of blockchain technology in public services showcases its potential beyond financial applications.

He stated, “By giving residents control over their identities, we are not only improving privacy and security but also laying the foundation for a future where personal data ownership becomes a basic right, protected by advanced cryptographic zero-knowledge proofs.”

In another key initiative, Buenos Aires has integrated Ethereum training into its high school curriculum, offering courses in Solidity, the programming language for building decentralised applications (DApps) on Ethereum.

The city’s commitment to blockchain underscores its focus on innovation, digital transformation, and empowering citizens with secure digital solutions.
