On October 7th, Illyriad Games co-founder Ben Adams launched the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-7781), aiming to shorten the block generation time on the Ethereum network from the current 12 seconds to 8 seconds, increase Rollup-based latency, and increase the capacity of blobs to reduce Layer 2 network fees.
In addition to increasing mainnet throughput, the proposal also aims to allocate bandwidth usage over time, reducing peak bandwidth demand without increasing the number of individual blocks or blobs.
Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, expressed his approval of EIP on GitHub and stated that his proposal is consistent with some broader goals proposed by Vitalik and the Ethereum Scaling Organization. Drake stated that reducing block time will make decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap v3 "1.22 times more efficient" and can "save about $100 million in CEX-DEX arbitrage annually, ultimately bringing better execution results to users."
