Winklevoss donates $4M in Bitcoin to fund new programs at college
Howard Winklevoss, the father of Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, has donated $4 million in Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) to Grove City College, marking the college's first cryptocurrency gift.
The donation will support the development of new business programs at the institution, where Winklevoss studied in the 1960s and developed an interest in the Austrian school of economics—a theory that later influenced Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Winklevoss explained that his interest in Bitcoin began when he understood it as a form of non-governmental digital money with a fixed supply.
"In short, sound money that works like email," he said.
His education at Grove City College, where he learned about sound money from economist Hans Sennholz, significantly shaped his views on financial systems and Bitcoin.
Tyler Winklevoss noted that while he and his brother Cameron introduced their father to Bitcoin in 2012, his early education at Grove City laid the groundwork for his understanding of its value.
"In some ways, it was our dad who got us into Bitcoin," Tyler reflected, emphasizing how his father's discussions on economic theories influenced their perspectives.
Howard Winklevoss invested in Bitcoin in 2013 after recognizing that it combined properties of gold, such as scarcity and soundness, with the efficiency of digital technology.
"Bitcoin is not only an asset but also a network, making it easier to send around the world, which solves the portability problem that gold has," Tyler added.
With a background in academia and business, Howard Winklevoss has been involved in various ventures, including teaching actuarial science at the Wharton School for a decade and founding multiple tech firms.
At press time, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $60,334.14.
