Algorand Foundation's New Ad Criticizes Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, Sparking Controversy
PANews reported on May 24 that a new advertisement released by the Algorand Foundation on YouTube on May 23 has sparked heated discussions. The advertisement heavily criticizes competitor networks Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, suggesting they are unsuitable for payments.
Reportedly, the advertisement is titled "When Blockchain Meets the Real World, Only One Can Deliver." The ad features a supermarket checkout where customers attempt to pay using three different cryptocurrency assets: Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. In the ad, the customer trying to pay with Bitcoin is told to wait because the transaction takes 27 minutes. The customer using Ethereum is informed that the transaction requires a $112 fee, while the customer choosing Solana cannot complete the payment as the transaction keeps failing. The scene then shifts to the next checkout, where a customer uses Algorand to complete the payment instantly, accompanied by the caption "Instant Finality, Low Fees, Designed for the Speed of Life." Political advisor and entrepreneur Anthony Scaramucci makes a cameo at the end of the ad, asking how to join the Algorand checkout. However, some commenters on X later pointed out Scaramucci's hypocrisy, as he posted on X just hours after the ad's release, stating that the next product is "SOL ETF."
As of the time of writing, the ad has garnered over 700,000 views on X, causing quite a stir on crypto social media. One commenter stated, "Algorand can run 21 transactions per second but can't fund its main browser, yet it spends over $100,000 on an ad. This is not the right approach." Chainlink community liaison Zach Rynes commented, "This kind of marketing is pointless." However, not all responses were critical. Kernel Edge co-founder Hilmar Ingimundarson said the Algorand team's marketing was "spot on," while XRP cafe co-founder "Vet" remarked that although the ad was harsh on other blockchain networks, it was "indeed entertaining."
