Six plaintiffs ask for retrial of Tornado Cash sanctions case
On November 14th, according to court documents, six plaintiffs including Joseph Van Loon, Tyler Almeida, Alexander Fisher, Preston Van Loon, Kevin Vitale, and Nate Welch have submitted a case to the Fifth Circuit Court regarding the Treasury Department's decision to sanction Tornado Cash. The case will be reviewed by the court.
Previously in September 2022, six people including two Coinbase employees filed a lawsuit in the Western District Court of Texas against the Treasury Department's decision to sanction Tornado Cash. Coinbase will provide financial support for the lawsuit. In April 2023, the plaintiffs submitted a motion for summary judgment. In August 2023, in the lawsuit supported by Coinbase regarding the sanction of Tornado Cash, Judge Robert Pitman in the district court submitted a document stating that he ordered the dismissal of part of the plaintiffs' motion for summary judgment. The court considered Tornado Cash to be an association in the ordinary sense and therefore an entity that can be designated under OFAC regulations.
