The Digital Dollar Project, a non-neutral, non-profit forum focused on exploring digital innovation in money and future-proofing the U.S. dollar, has called for the modernization of the networks surrounding the currency to preserve its current status. In its recently published white paper, the project remarks that while the dollar is still peerless in its role, it moves on top of technology reaching obsolescence in an increasingly digital world. The organization envisions a future when not one, but many dollar-linked digital alternatives combine to keep the dollar relevant both in retail transactions as well as in international trade settlements. Among these are tokenized deposits, stablecoins, foreign CBDCs, and centralized and decentralized digital assets, with each serving different use cases in a better way. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has lifted sanctions against Tornado Cash, a decentralized cryptocurrency mixer, effectively legalizing its use for American citizens. This move reverses the August 2022 sanctions imposed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which had accused the platform of facilitating money laundering activities, including transactions linked to North Korea’s Lazarus Group . Tornado Cash, launched in 2019, is an Ethereum-based protocol that enhances transaction privacy by allowing users to obfuscate the origins and destinations of their cryptocurrency transfers. While this service caters to individuals seeking financial privacy, it has also been exploited by malicious actors to launder illicit funds. The Treasury Department had alleged that Tornado Cash was used to launder over $7 billion in virtual currency, including $455 million stolen by the Lazarus Group. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commented on the decision, stating, “Digital assets present enormous opportunities for innovation and value creation for the American people. Securing the digital asset industry from abuse by North Korea and other illicit actors is essential to establishing U.S. leadership and ensuring that the American people can benefit from financial innovation and inclusion.” Critics argued that sanctioning open-source software infringed upon free speech and technological innovation. In response, a group of Tornado Cash users, supported by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, filed a lawsuit challenging the sanctions. In November 2024, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, stating that the Treasury had overstepped its authority. The court emphasized that Tornado Cash’s immutable smart contracts did not qualify as “property” under federal law, thereby falling outside the scope of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Judge Don Willett noted that while the technology could be misused , it was the role of Congress, not the courts, to amend relevant laws.

Digital token launchpad Pump.fun has launched its own native decentralized exchange (DEX), PumpSwap, on the Solana blockchain by the name of PumpSwap . The move comes after the platform saw its revenue drop by nearly 60% in the last month. According to reports, Pump.fun’s new DEX will eliminate the existing migration process in the previous system and discard the associated 6 SOL fee. Tokens launched on Pump.fun will now be immediately available for trading upon completion of their bonding curve, without the need for establishing a separate liquidity pool on Raydium. Pump.fun announced the innovation in its latest post on X, highlighting the deliverables of the new product. The Pump.fun team highlighted that this new infrastructure will enable users to freely create and contribute to liquidity pools, as well as trade any token listed on the PumpSwap exchange. The core rationale behind PumpSwap’s creation is to achieve a frictionless environment for trading coins. Pump.fun acknowledged that the prior migration system introduced friction, potentially impeding the momentum of new tokens and adding unnecessary complexities for users. In the meantime, Pump.fun noted that it is creating a more sustainable ecosystem besides the newly launched DEX. According to the project, the DEX will incorporate a revenue-sharing model for token creators, potentially distributing millions of dollars to these participants and their communities, thereby incentivizing the launch of higher-quality projects. Regarding transaction costs, PumpSwap’s fee structure is competitive. Each trade executed on the DEX will incur a fee of 0.25%. Of this, 0.20% will be allocated to liquidity providers, and the remaining 0.05% will be retained by the protocol.
