What is TerraClassicUSD (USTC)?
TerraClassicUSD is a decentralized algorithmic USD-pegged stablecoin issued by Terra. It was originally created in 2019 with the name TerraUSD, but after the collapse of the Terra ecosystem in 2022, which led to the depeg of the token, the token was aborted and its name was changed to TerraClassicUSD. Subsequently, a new TerraUSD was released to replace the depegged TerraClassicUSD.
How TerraClassicUSD (USTC) Works
As an algorithmic USD-pegged stablecoin, USTC is secured by the native token of the old Terra network, LUNA (now rebranded as LUNC), through the seigniorage process. This means that for every USTC minted, an amount of LUNC equivalent to $1 is burned. The opposite applies for the burning of USTC.
Though USTC and LUNC were forsaken by the original developer team after the collapse of Terra in 2022, a new developer community has taken up the work and continues building the ecosystem.
