All-women AI PhD program to begin in Africa in 2025
A groundbreaking Africa-Europe initiative is set to train 700 African PhD students in artificial intelligence (AI) over the next ten years, with its first cohort being exclusively female.
Spearheaded by CORE AI, a collaboration between African and European universities, the program aims to enroll 100 African women annually, starting in February 2025.
This initiative is focused on empowering women researchers in AI, a field where female representation remains notably low.
According to CORE AI, supporting women in such underrepresented fields is essential for fostering diversity in research.
The program also aims to address systemic gender discrimination faced by women in AI research, which is a challenge even in European institutions.
By prioritising women in its inaugural intake, CORE AI seeks to create a supportive environment that encourages more African women to pursue advanced research and leadership roles in AI.
