The commander-in-chief has kept several of his campaign trail promises to the crypto community during his first 100 days in office. Trump has pardoned Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, called for the establishment of a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, and become the first president to sign a crypto bill. U.S. President Donald Trump will complete his first 100 days in office on Wednesday—a benchmark widely regarded as a window into an administration's policy priorities. And while the commander-in-chief's political playbook continues to mystify both his allies and adversaries, at least one thing is clear: He's largely committed to championing crypto. Over the past three months, Trump has passed several executive orders that address the crypto community's interests, including a directive for the U.S. Treasury to accumulate strategic reserves of Bitcoin and other digital assets, ‌as well as an order protecting digital asset miners’ businesses. He also kept to his campaign promise to free cypherpunk icon Ross Ulbricht, who founded dark web marketplace Silk Road

As the crypto landscape continues to evolve, the Layer 1 (L1) battleground remains one of its most competitive arenas. Ethereum may dominate the scene, and Solana and Avalanche have captured their fair share of market share, but a new generation of L1s is emerging with unique promises. Among them is Shardeum ($SHM)—a project built around scalability, decentralization, and accessibility. But can it be the next big L1 bet? What is Shardeum? Shardeum is a smart contract platform that leverages dynamic state sharding to achieve linear scalability without compromising decentralization. Unlike traditional blockchain models that suffer from congestion and high gas fees as usage increases, Shardeum’s architecture allows throughput to scale as more nodes join the network. This means more users and validators can actually improve network performance—a compelling proposition for developers and enterprises. Key Features That Make Shardeum Stand Out 1. Dynamic State Sharding Unlike other sharding-based projects that only implement network or transaction sharding, Shardeum uses state sharding, where the state of the blockchain is divided across shards. This enables true parallel processing of transactions and ensures nodes only need to store a fraction of the total state. 2. Linear Scalability With its “scale-out” architecture, Shardeum claims it can process thousands of transactions per second (TPS), and potentially scale infinitely. The addition of every new node increases TPS—making it theoretically more efficient over time. 3. EVM Compatibility By supporting Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), Shardeum allows developers to migrate dApps seamlessly from Ethereum or other EVM-compatible chains. This interoperability lowers the barrier to entry and accelerates adoption. 4. Fair Tokenomics Shardeum has introduced a capped elastic supply model, where transaction fees are burned and token issuance is limited based on network activity. 51% of SHM tokens are reserved for the community—ensuring decentralization and incentivizing participation. Challenges and Concerns 1. Early Stage Risks Shardeum is still in testnet and has not yet launched its mainnet. While the testnet has shown promising results, the real test will be in production when demand, volume, and security threats increase. 2. Security & Audit Transparency As of mid-2025, Shardeum has yet to complete comprehensive security audits from major firms. For a novel architecture like state sharding, this leaves open the possibility of undiscovered vulnerabilities. 3. Validator Incentives The reward model requires validators to be online and active to earn SHM. If the network becomes less profitable, it could impact decentralization and network resilience. Balancing rewards and costs remains a delicate task. Market Position and Funding Shardeum has raised around $23.6 million in seed and private rounds, with backing from reputable but not top-tier VCs. While this modest funding allows for focused growth, it may limit Shardeum’s ability to market aggressively or compete with billion-dollar projects like Solana or Aptos. The Verdict: A High-Risk, High-Reward Play Shardeum is arguably one of the most technically ambitious L1s of this cycle. Its scalable, decentralized infrastructure targets the holy grail of blockchain performance. But it’s early, under-tested, and will need to prove its claims under real-world pressure. For investors, $SHM represents a high-risk, high-reward opportunity. If Shardeum successfully executes on its thesis and delivers a reliable, scalable mainnet, it could emerge as a dark horse among L1s. But like many early-stage crypto projects, the path is fraught with technical, economic, and regulatory challenges.
