Thailand’s Stock Exchange (SET) will temporarily ban the short-selling of all securities and reduce daily price limits, starting tomorrow, April 8th through April 11th. This emergency action addresses significant market volatility linked to recent shifts in global tariff policies. Both SET and the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX) approved the temporary measures late Monday to curb excessive price swings driven by global trade uncertainties and give investors time to assess conditions, according to reports confirmed by Bloomberg . For context, short-selling involves borrowing shares to sell them at a high price and then repurchasing them later at a lower price to make a profit. In light of market stress, Thailand has temporarily suspended the practice to reduce volatility. SET’s Board of Governors approved a set of emergency trading rules, which TFEX swiftly adopted. These measures are to stabilize the market over the next three days, from April 8 to April 11, 2025. One of the major changes is the reduction of daily price movement limits. Stocks and unit trusts on SET and mai will now have a ±15% range, down from ±30%. Foreign shares will have a ±30% range, reduced from ±60%. Additionally, futures contracts on TFEX, including index, sector, and single stock futures, will be limited to a ±15% movement, down from ±30%. Investors have responded cautiously, prompting regulators worldwide to intervene to prevent further market declines. At the Presidio Bitcoin’s 21 in 21 podcast, when asked about the possible causes of a hypothetical bitcoin failure, Dorsey remarked that irrelevance might cause bitcoin’s downfall in the long term, signaling a shift toward payments as one of the elements to prevent this outcome. “I think it has to be payments for it to be relevant uh on the everyday otherwise it’s just something you kind of buy and forget and only use in emergency situations or when you want to get liquid again,” Dorsey assessed, remarking payments as the main driver behind the adoption that would save bitcoin. Later in the podcast, Dorsey mentioned payments again as the main mitigating solution to a hypothetical bitcoin failure outcome. Fear is growing among Investors that Trump’s new tariffs would slow down US and global economic growth, and increase inflation. The minutes of Federal Reserve’s March Federal Open Market Committee meeting will be released on Wednesday, giving possible insights into the central bank’s next move. Thursday’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report will also be closely eyed as investors gauge price pressures following the tariff announcements. Economists expect March inflation to remain unchanged after February’s steeper-than-expected decrease, but recession fears have been reignited. Thursday will also see data on initial jobless claims released, shedding light on labor markets in the United States. Friday will see the Producer Price Index (PPI) report released, highlighting wholesale price trends that can ultimately affect consumer prices. If global tariff tensions escalate or economic data disappoints, the selling pressure will likely continue throughout the week. Crypto markets have seen one of the largest daily declines of the year, with a 9% slump in total capitalization.
