TRON’s Justin Sun Secures Prime Minister Status In Liberland
- Located near the second largest European river, Liberland crowns a new PM.
- Voting is organized solely on the blockchain, erasing human error probability.
- Liberland’s president offered local cryptocurrency to those helping to build.
TRON founder and entrepreneur Justin Sun is many things besides his crypto persona. However, his latest deed has surprised both fans and haters—the owner of HTX has been officially pronounced the Prime Minister of Liberland.
Sun Rises to PM in Conflict-Torn Crypto Country
Liberland, an unrecognized micro country near the Danube River, is in one of the most conflicted areas in the Balkans. Croatia and Serbia contest the territory, and the two neighboring nations have a long history of disputes over the former Yugoslavia.

However, the micro country, which has yet to be recognized by any state, employs an innovative blockchain-based voting system. “The system has a unique ability to eliminate doubt regarding election outcomes, a challenge faced by many countries still relying on traditional methods,” states the official document from Liberland’s Congress.
Sun was nominated as prime minister in the test congress election, and three “well-established Liberlanders” were re-elected to serve in Congress. According to data from Q1 of 2024, Liberland reached 1,200 registered citizens who could vote in this election.
Since 2015, Czech politician Vít Jedlička has initiated claims to a floodplain territory near the Danube in a crusade to establish a country free from outside economic interference, minimal government involvement, and a full-on crypto-based local economy .
Liberland was consequently established in 2015 and has received over 735,000 requests for citizenship since. Existing Liberlandians have paid up to $10,000 for their citizenships.
Despite its dubious legal status, Liberland has garnered mass media attention and even offered free citizenship and local cryptocurrency to new inhabitants who managed to stay at least a week. The Czech classical liberalism-leaning politician claimed the territory based on the “terra nullius doctrine,” asserting that the under-three-mile area does not breach Croatian or Serbian sovereignty.
On the Flipside
- Multiple reports show that the Croatian authorities have treated the Liberlanders as intruders.
- As no nation on Earth recognizes Liberland, the citizens of Liberland often get caught for trespassing.
Why This Matters
This marks the first case of blockchain technology powering a governmental voting procedure, potentially leading to other countries testing out this method soon.
